Farm Crew Job Description

Stoneboat farm is a sustainable vegetable and poultry farm.  We hire a farm crew through the farming season (roughly March through October) each year.  The work is physical and outside 90% of the time, and it’s fulfilling and satisfying about 100% of the time.  We sometimes spend all day bent over a row planting little plants or continuously harvesting so. much. salad. But, by the end of the season you can see the thousands of plants producing wonderful food for our community.

Stoneboat farm is a pretty good place to work - we have competitive compensation (see below) but it’s also a really good crew of humans (and dogs too!). We’ve been at this long enough that we aren’t making the mistakes and working the long hours we did at the start but we’re still new enough to be making changes every year on the farm - changes you can be a part of! Many of our crew members have been here for 4 or more seasons and we’d love to welcome another awesome person to the farm!

Responsibilities:
As a whole, the farm crew is responsible for doing most of the hand work on the farm.  You will have a part in clean up, seeding, transplanting, irrigation, harvest, post harvest, clearing out the fields, and just about everything we do on the farm.  You might work by yourself with some direction at the beginning of the task or you might work with a crew to get a larger task done.

Though there are a lot of different tasks we do through the year, there are also a lot of tasks we do over and over in the year. It’s a chance to really learn a few parts of the farm (you might well be the best bunched green harvester in the area by September!) and see some other things you may not have had a chance to do on other farms or would like to learn. As much as possible we try to assign tasks cooperatively so folks can do something comfortable or familiar as they are feeling. Of course, many days we all end up doing the same task of weeding the carrots or harvesting the fall beets.

Requirements:

Must be able to work with others to cooperatively finish tasks
Must be able to lift and carry 35 pound bins over uneven dirt paths
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion
Must be willing to work outside in the weather every day you are here
Must be willing to follow directions and learn from other crew members and leaders

And it is important to take care of yourself! It is also your responsibility to make sure you’re feeling well and the work is safe for your body - if it isn’t or you need a break, we want and expect you to tell us.

Compensation:
Starts at $17 dollars per hour, negotiable based on experience and responsibilities.

Paid sick and vacation time, flexible schedule
401K with a match

And as many really good veggies as you’d like!

Experience:
Experience on a farm is preferred.  We have space for all sorts of skills on the crew each year and will hire people with no farm experience if you are willing to learn and especially if you have other skills to share (garden experience, maintenance experience, experience with physical labor, experience selling veggies, or anything else related).

Some farm crew jobs may include added responsibilities.  We look for people with more experience for these jobs.
