Farm Crew/Market Staff

Stoneboat farm is a sustainable vegetable and poultry farm. We hire a farm crew through the farming season (roughly March through October) each year. The work is physical and outside 90% of the time, and it’s fulfilling and satisfying about 100% of the time. We sometimes spend all day bent over a row planting little plants or continuously harvesting so. much. salad. But, by the end of the season you can see the thousands of plants producing wonderful food for our community. This job has a public facing side as well - you get to help distribute at our CSA and/or our Farmers’ Markets. It’s a good chance to meet wonderful people who care about their food and see where all that salad goes!

Responsibilities:
This job has two parts, The job is one to four days a week on the farm crew (generally morning shifts) and one or two days helping out at our on farm market (afternoon to evening shifts). Both part time and full time are available. Generally we like when folks can work on the farm as well as at the distributions but we would consider anyone with a passion for food and some understanding of farming for a market roll.

Farm crew:
As a whole, the farm crew is responsible for doing most of the hand work on the farm. You will have a part in clean up, seeding, transplanting, irrigation, harvest, post harvest, clearing out the fields, and just about everything we do on the farm. You might work by yourself with some direction at the beginning of the task or you might work with a crew to get a larger task done. We work every week day, how many and which days you work can be flexible. See the details here.

Market help:

We need help running our very large CSA and on farm market each week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as our busy markets on Saturday (in the Hollywood neighborhood of Portland) and Sunday (Orenco Station in Hillsboro). This part of the job is working a farmers market booth (or even a catering event) - you'll help set up the tents, tables, and veggies and then keep tables stocked and help folks choose their veggies. The set up phase of this job is very physical - veggies are heavy and we sell a lot of them; you will need to get them in and out of a truck.

At the markets, being helpful and kind to the members is a must, knowing about veggies is a plus! Fortunately, we have some very wonderful CSA members and shoppers - they’re easy to like! At the market (though not on the on Farm distribution) you’ll need to be able to add quickly in your head to work a register. You may do some set up alone but almost every market has at least two staff people.

Some farm crew jobs may include added responsibilities. We look for people with more experience for these jobs.
